Kept = cash + card + tip pool − tip-out. Free from tipharbor.app
How to fill it in
- Cash tips: what you walked out with in cash, before any tip-out.
- Card tips: tips on cards or apps, even if they're paid to you later on your paycheck.
- Tip pool: what you received from a pool, if your place pools tips.
- Tip-out and tipped out to: what you paid to the bar, bussers, runners or kitchen, and who. Keep the names; they matter at tax time.
- Kept: cash + card + tip pool, minus tip-out. That's what the night was really worth in tips.
Write it down before you leave, while you still remember the numbers. A week of guesses on Sunday night is how money goes missing.
Why keep a tip log at all?
In the US, the IRS asks tipped employees to keep a daily record of their tips and to report them to their employer each month they're $20 or more. A clean log also settles arguments about tip-outs, shows which nights are worth picking up, and makes tax time a lot less stressful. Our guide on tracking tips for taxes covers what the IRS asks for, with links to its own pages.
Rather not carry paper?
TipHarbor is the same log on your iPhone, and it does the math for you: what you kept, your tips per hour, your best nights, what's still owed on your paycheck, and a year-end summary for taxes. It's free, with no ads and no account.
